As an ace woman, I felt drawn to it in my own special way...and I soon found out why.

The Princess of Convenient Plot Devices (Watashi wa Gotsuugou Shugi na Kaiketsu Tantou no Oujo de Aru) is a Josei Isekai light novel and manga series that—while it is a little tropey—is actually a fun story in its own right. Its two-faced fujoshi heroine Octavia is flawed, funny, and fun to root for.

So, in case it wasn't clear, Tammy and Tara are canonically bi and ace respectively. And I am bi-ace myself (biromantic graysexual, technically.)
After I got the idea for this episode several months ago, I learned about that sitcom idea someone on tumblr had had a while ago called "All or Nothing" about roommates who are ace and pan (in my view, pan and bi are the same and I use the terms interchangeably, but it was specifically "pansexual" in the tumblr post) and that so many people wished such a webseries existed....well, it does now!
Since this is in the style of a late-90's sitcom and since the girls are both still a bit in the questioning phase, (and since education on sexuality SUCKED back then…and now, tbh) I didn't have them use the proper terms to describe themselves, but know that I wasn't omitting that to be sly or to queer bait.

ゴメンね 素直じゃなくて 夢の中なら云える 思考回路はショート寸前 今すぐ 会いたいよ
Gomen ne sunao janakute Yume no naka nara ieru Shikoukairo wa shooto sunzen Ima sugu aitai yo
I’m sorry I hide my true feelings. I can only express them in my dreams. My brain is on the verge of short circuiting. I’m missing you so bad right now.
Nakitakunaru you na moonlight Denwa mo dekinai midnight Datte junjou dou shiyou Haato wa mangekyou
Moonlight makes me want to cry. Midnight is too late to call you. Well, I’m new to these feelings. What else can I do? My heart is a kaleidoscope of emotions.
Tsuki no hikari ni michibikare Nando mo meguri au Seiza no matataki kazoe uranau koi no yukue Onaji kuni ni umareta no mirakuru romansu
Guided by the moonlight, Fate will bring us together, time after time. By counting the twinkling constellations, we can foresee our love’s destination. We were born on the same planet, and that’s a miracle romance.
Deatta toki no natsukashii manazashi wasurenai Ikusenman no hoshi kara anata wo mitsukerareru Guuzen mo chansu ni kaeru ikikata ga suki yo
I’ll never forget how warmly familiar your gaze was, The first day I met you. I can always find you, from the tens of millions of planets out there. Even coincidences can become golden opportunities and I love having that philosophy.
Fushigi na kiseki kurosu shite Nando mo meguriau Seiza no matataki kazoe uranau koi no yukue Onaji kuni ni umareta no mirakuru romansu Shinjiteiru no mirakuru romansu
As mysterious miracles intersect each other, Fate will bring us together, time after time. By counting the twinkling constellations, we can foresee our love’s destination. We were born on the same planet, and that’s a miracle romance. I firmly believe in it, this miracle romance.

I used to love literal translations, so I understand where the pro-literal side is coming from, but now, I practice and am an advocate of localized anime subs. I don’t know the exact numbers, but the anime fan community today seems a lot more open to localized subs than they were back when I first became an otaku in the late-90’s. But there are still many otaku out there who think literal translations are the way to go and I hope to enlighten a few with this video-essay.

If you answer “yes,” you’re only partially correct. It also means “here you go,” “present,” “thank you,” “meee!,” “coming!”......and sometimes, depending on how the question before it is phrased, hai can also mean “no”! And just like hai, the words iie and sumimasen also have other meanings besides “no” and “excuse me.”
In this video, I take a scene from the anime Glass Mask, where acting students must do a scene using only the words hai, iie, sumimasen, and arigatou against a scene partner who can say anything. This is a perfect example of a scene that just cannot be translated properly, no matter how good a translator you are.

Often, the titles are kept in English, but sometimes they're localized (translated) to appeal to a Japanese audience. How does this relate to translating art and entertainment as a whole?

Ooh, I tried To like this show, But it’s not the reboot for me!
Remember when they had more screen time? Remember when she had many more lines? Remember banter with Usagi and Rei? Remember monsters of the day?
It’s just a copy (of the manga version) All they do is epically (although the music is cool) Fight in the moonlight.
I’ll admit the artwork leaves little else to be desired But I still want some characters with personalities. I think the old writers should be re-hired.
Why not make up plots that are different From the 90’s manga and anime? PGSM did that and it was awesome! I’ll take it over SMC any day!
Although at times, the episodes were “filler,” And they were more comedic than “thriller.” It only means that when the girls had their deaths, My reactions were stronger than… "meh"
It’s just too sappy (all romance and no play) It needs some comic relief (It’s just too gloomy and gray) From scenes in the sunlight…
I’ll admit I faithfully tune in every other week to watch it. But each time I get more jaded. My interest has faded. I’m coming really close to calling it quits.
Tried to wake up early to watch it But I’m disappointed time after time So I’ll make the best of things and I’ll mock it. And on Saturdays I’ll sleep until nine.
Playing at the beach! (diet out of reach!) Heart-shaped eyes at cute guys! Shopping at the mall! (Gotta eat it all!) Just bein’ normal girls!
Remember when it took so long For the girls to win? Which made it much more meaningful when they saved the world.
I guess I just don’t like the manga. Truthfully, I don’t remember it well. It is gathering dust here on my bookshelf. If I go to ebay, think it might sell?
You may ask why I made up this little ditty Why don’t I just leave the show alone? It’s because I think this reboot is shitty (But I’m half-joking, just so you know.)
