On Boxing Day 1943, off the northern coast of Norway, in freezing conditions and pitch darkness, a fleet of Allied ships including HMS Belfast attacked and sank the German battlecruiser KMS Scharnhorst.
Of the 2000 sailors on the Scharnhorst, 36 survived.
XX Scharnhorst was created in response to this event for the 2012 Thames Festival.
