Examination of Dental Xray tube heads, older style using iron core transformer and modern high frequency type with Voltage multiplier. Please do not do this at home, risk of High voltage electrocution and exposure to Xrays!
Older tube heads incorporate an iron core transformer with a typical HV output of approx. 75KV. Output is unrectified, the X-ray tube itself acts as a Diode.
Newer tube heads incorporate a smaller high frequency transformer connected to a voltage multiplier stage to provide the necessary HV to the X-ray tube. Some of these tube heads break down due to the transformer going open circuit.
