Xiaomi has just unveiled the new hand for its CyberOne robot.
And it's terrifyingly realistic.
Reduced by 60% in volume, the hand is now almost identical in size and shape to an adult human hand. A 1:1 ratio.
Why this is crucial: when training a robot via human teleoperation, if the robot's hand is too different from a human hand, the training data degrades. This is what engineers call the "isomorphism problem."
Xiaomi has just solved it.
The specs are impressive:
→ 22 to 27 active degrees of freedom (+83% vs. the previous version)
→ 8,200 mm² of touch sensors covering the entire palm, precise grip even without vision
→ 150,000 gripping cycles tested (61 hours of continuous testing). Previous versions broke before 10,000 cycles. → Capable of screwing in screws AND pinching a feather without crushing it
And the craziest innovation: bionic sweat glands.
Yes, the hand sweats. A micro-pump system evaporates 0.5 mL of water per minute to dissipate approximately 10W of heat. Directly inspired by human biology, this allows the robot to maintain power take-offs on a production line without overheating.
For training, Xiaomi uses human-worn touchscreen gloves to capture real-time handling data. This data feeds two in-house AI models.
Background: A few weeks ago, Xiaomi announced a 90.2% success rate on a real-world automotive assembly line. This hand is designed to achieve 99.9%.
