From the famous declaration “I am Heathcliff” to the novel’s violent passions and lasting consequences, this is a book that resists being neatly labelled as a romance.Rather than focusing on destiny or soulmates, I explore how obsession, power, class, and emotional damage operate at the heart of the novel. Heathcliff and Catherine’s bond is intense and unforgettable, but it is also destructive, not only to themselves but to everyone around them. Emily Brontë does not isolate their relationship from its effects, and the novel repeatedly refuses to excuse harm in the name of love.I also reflect on why this matters now, particularly as new adaptations continue to present Wuthering Heights as a sweeping love story. This week, I headed out onto the Haworth moors with my daughter Emily, two dogs and some rather unpredictable British weather to find out.What started as a beautiful day soon involved wind, rain, sunshine, sideways weather and two dogs who had absolutely no intention of making the walk straightforward. The Brontë Sisters 2026-06-12 | What were the Luddites, and what do they have to do with the Brontës?In the early 1800s, West Yorkshire was going through huge industrial change. New machinery was transforming textile work, traditional cottage industries were disappearing, and communities across places like Haworth and Huddersfield were feeling the impact of rising poverty, falling wages, and uncertainty.Out of this came the Luddites, a movement of skilled workers who targeted machinery they believed was threatening their livelihoods. What can Lodge Street tell us about Haworth in the Brontes years? The Brontë Sisters 2026-05-15 | In this video, I’m stepping away from Haworth’s main streets and exploring one of its most easily missed corners, Lodge Street, known in the Brontës’ time as Newell Hill.It’s a small cul-de-sac just off Main Street, and most people walk straight past it on their way to the Parsonage or church. What Charlotte Brontë Thought Was Worth Reading The Brontë Sisters 2026-05-01 | Have you ever wondered what Charlotte Brontë actually thought was worth reading?In 1834, a young Charlotte Brontë writes to her friend Ellen Nussey from Haworth, offering her a detailed guide to what she believes is worth reading. In this video, I go through that letter in full, exploring not just the books she recommends, but what her choices reveal about her thinking at this point in her life, and the way she understood literature, judgment, and friendship.We look closely at poetry, fiction, history, biography, natural history, and divinity, and how Charlotte frames each of these for Ellen, sometimes with strong opinions, sometimes with encouragement, and sometimes with surprising restraint. Along the way, we also see how her ideas about reading begin to take shape long before she writes Jane Eyre.Rather than simply a list of books, this is a window into how she thought about reading itself, what she believed mattered, and how she shared those beliefs with someone close to her.If you would like to read Charlotte Brontë’s letter for yourself, I’ve included it below.Charlotte to Ellen; Haworth, 4 July 1834You ask me to recommend some books for your perusal; I will do so in as few words as I can. Both these were great men and their works are like themselves, You will know how to choose the good and avoid the evil, the finest passages are always the purest, the bad are invariably revolting you will never wish to read them over twice; Omit the Comedies of Shak[e]speare and the Don Juan, perhaps the Cain of Byron though the latter is a magnificent Poem and read the rest fearlessly, that must indeed be a depraved mind which can gather evil from Henry the 8th from Richard 3d from Macbeth and Hamlet and Julius Cesar, Scott's sweet, Wild, romantic Poetry can do you no harm nor can Wordsworth's nor Campbell's nor Southey's, the greatest part at least of his some is certainly exceptionable, For History read Hume, Rollin, and the Universal History if you can I never did. For Fiction - read Scott alone all novels after his are worthless. For Biography, read Johnson's lives of the Poets, Boswell's life of Johnson, Southey's life of Nelson, Lockhart's life of Burns, Moore's life of Sheridan, Moore's life of Byron, Wolfe's Remains, For Natural History, read Bewick, and Audubon, and Goldsmith and White of Selborne. Haworth Graveyard: Hidden Lives in the Brontë Village The Brontë Sisters 2026-04-17 | Filmed in Haworth churchyard, this video explores the hidden lives behind the gravestones in Brontë country and the stories of the people who lived alongside the Brontë family.Haworth Graveyard is often seen through the lens of the Brontës, but it is also the resting place of an entire village community. These were the people who would have walked the same streets, attended Haworth Parish Church, and lived their lives in the same world as Patrick Brontë, William Weightman, and Arthur Bell Nicholls.In this visit, I read several gravestones and share the stories behind them, from long family histories carved into a single stone to lives marked by loss and hardship. Some stories feel almost impossible to read without thinking about what life in Haworth must have been like in the nineteenth century.We also look at Ponden Hall, often linked to Wuthering Heights and thought to have inspired Thrushcross Grange, and the story of Elizabeth Heaton, whose life became caught in scandal, difficult choices, and tragedy. What Can One House Tell Us About Victorian Halifax and the World of the Brontës? The Brontë Sisters 2026-01-09 | Join me on a wonderful day at Bankfield Museum in Halifax, exploring history, craftsmanship, and a Costume Drama exhibition that closed just before the end of 2025. I went to see the To Walk Invisible costumes up close, but ended up discovering so much more. From beautiful period costumes to original historic garments and even a hidden Victorian library tucked away inside the building, Bankfield Museum is full of surprises.In this video, I take you through the halls and rooms of Bankfield Museum, sharing the story of Edward Akroyd, the man who built this house, and how it reflects the wider industrial and social history of Halifax in Victorian times. From Jane Austen productions like Pride and Prejudice and Emma, to Downton Abbey, Gentleman Jack, and the 2016 To Walk Invisible costumes, this exhibition offered something for every costume drama fan and Brontë enthusiast.I also pause to admire the original historic garments from the Bankfield Museum collection and explore the incredible craftsmanship of the period costumes.
