When Xa Tollemache came to live at Helmingham Hall in Suffolk, the home of her husband's family for 500 years, she knew nothing about gardens. After learning the fundamentals from Helmingham’s head gardener, she became thoroughly involved in the design and planting, and eventually launched her hugely successful career as a garden designer. Here she talks us through some of the aspects of the garden at Helmingham in midsummer, including the rose garden she planned and planted in 1982, the famous walled garden with its long borders and vegetable gardens, and the new woodland garden she laid out twenty years ago. Now that Xa and her husband have moved to a smaller house nearby, Helmingham is run by her son Edward and his wife Sophie. The gardens are open to the public throughout the summer.
