DarkfallAs some of you may already know, recently I have been working on a side project. It's a 2D Game called The Throne, where you play as the King of a Mythical Land. You must manage your Kingdom whilst building alliances with the Nobility. Not to mention the Weekly petitioners always asking for a handout. Then, wait.. What's that?.. Vikings?.. Invasion?.. Possible Betrayal?.. Typical.. .
It was suggested that I start creating Development Logs and share with you guys the progress of this little game.
So I decided to record what little I had done so far and here it is.
The Throne is my first real attempt at creating a Game. You play as King Urkhart and must manage your Kingdom before eventually fighting off Invaders not to mention deal with internal problems.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this video, thanks for the continued support and I will see you next time!..Blender Python : Why YOU should LEARN PYTHONDarkfall2022-07-13 | In this Blender Python Video I want to tell you, Yes YOU! Why you should Learn Python.
Each of us use Blender for many different reasons but no matter why you use Blender and if you find yourself repeating actions or processes then you WILL certainly benefit from Learning Python.
You DO NOT need to be an expert to create add-ons, in fact with some basic knowledge you can begin to create add-ons or functions that will help speed up your workflow and free you from repeating the same actions over and over again!.
In this video I will show you a couple of examples to how I speed up my workflow. By using Python to create simple add-ons I save so much time with my projects and I hope you find the motivation to Learn Python.
If you are interested in Learning more about Python or creating your own add-ons, you can check out the Introduction Video I did here: youtu.be/cyt0O7saU4Q
Disagree? Tell me why you don't think you should learn python in the comments below..
I hope you find this video interesting and I hope it encourages you to try and Learn Python!.
If you are scripting with python and find this is the case you can head over to the Release Notes for the Python API and see what has been changed. It is a simple way of finding what code you need to change to fix your broken Add-ons.
Some of the changes may not apply to the code you are working on but if you find your code is broken I would certainly take a look at the "Breaking Changes" Section.
I hope you find this quick video helpful and as always thanks for watching!Blender VFX Tutorial: How to Create a Hoverbike [VFX Nodes]Darkfall2022-02-02 | In this Blender VFX Tutorial, we will be compositng a Hoverbike using the VFX nodes to help speed up our workflow. The VFX Nodes Add-on is free and can be found here: darkfallblender.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_8.html
This will help speed up your workflow when compositing this VFX shot. Though if you do not want to download the Add-on (that's cool too) you will just have a bit more work to do.
For those who have already seen some "Hoverboard" style effect will already be familiar with the process.. There is a new Version of the VFX nodes (minor changes and a small node update). So be sure to download the latest version!.
I hope you find this Blender VFX Tutorial helpful and as always thanks for watching!.Blender 3.0 Tutorial: How to Install an Add-on from FileDarkfall2022-01-23 | In this quick video I wanted to answer one of the questions I get asked a lot, and that is "How do I install an Add-on?"..
I will be using Blender 3.0 though it should not matter since it's the same for older versions of blender too.First we need an Add-on, if you want to download the VFX nodes Add-on be sure to check out the Blog page here: darkfallblender.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_8.html
With an Add-on Downloaded we can open up blender and head over to the Edit then Preferences. Within the Add-on section we can select the Install from File option. Select your add-on and install. Once installed we just need to activate it (by checking the check box) and we are done!. Make sure your settings save and you will no longer need to worry about that add-on again.
There is a bunch more content coming soon so be sure to check that out!. "Should I get a Pen and Tablet?" is a question I get asked a lot. I would say having a Tablet has made my job many times easier. If you are planning on using the 2D Animation / Grease Pencil then you might want to invest in a Tablet. That being said, you can do a lot with a mouse so it's not necessarily needed.
The Tablet I am using is a mid range Wacom Intuos which can be found here: * : amzn.to/3BdEWvZ
Though before this one I was using a really cheap one. It did the job and worked well with blender. Here are some cheaper Alternatives * : amzn.to/3jfJKuG

Patreons have access to this Add-on early and can have an impact on how the Add-on is developed. Patreons can download the Add-on Here:
The Particle Pro currently only has one Operation and that is the "Follow Path" option. With a Click of a single button the Add-on will not only add your Emitter and Particle System but it will also add a Path for your Particles to Follow.
Jump into Edit mode and define your own path!.Blender Particles Tutorial: How to Make Particles Follow a Path (Animation)Darkfall2021-07-15 | In this Blender Particles Tutorial, we will be taking a look at Particles and how we can make them follow a path we define.
As many of you know by know (and are probably sick of hearing about), I am creating a 2D Game and in which, I needed to create some kind of visual of sending a mass of troops from one place to another. You can check out the Throne Game here: youtu.be/X6GuCI3JKVI
Creating a Particle System to fit my need was a pretty easy task with @BlenderOfficial.
Once we have our map in place we need a few more things. Unlike about 99.9% of my tutorials we are actually going to USE the Default Cube!. By changing the Shader Color and Type, the Default Cube becomes the object that will be emitted in the Particle System.
Here I wanted a Clump of men starting at our base and then marching off to their destination. Though we can play around with the settings and get many different variations.
I hope this Video is helpful and answered the question of "How did you do that animation thingy".. As always thanks for watching!
#b3d #darkfall #animation #particlesBlender Grease Pencil Tutorial: How to Create a Fantasy Map (/Gimp)Darkfall2021-07-08 | In this Blender Grease Pencil Tutorial, we will be creating a Stylized Fantasy Map which I then used for the 2D Game I am creating called "The Throne". I had an Idea on what I wanted the Map to look like and it also had to fit the style of my Game.
I have made the Blend File and the Gimp File available to download for Patrons as part of the "Monthly Asset" Benefit. You can check out my Patreon here: patreon.com/DarkfallStudio
I am using a Wacom Tablet to draw these Images and though it's not entirely necessary to use one, It does make your job a lot easier. You can find a lot of cheap Tablets on the Web and even the Wacoms are not that bad. Here is the one I am using: amzn.to/3yF0LDA (*)
Using @BlenderOfficial's Grease Pencil, I first started by blocking in the rough details before moving on and creating the Line-Work. I used separate layers for each Line-work detail, so we can have greater control when importing them into a Photo editing software.
Why do we need a Photo editing software when we have blender? I hear you ask. Good Question!. Blender is amazing, but as far as I know it does not have a Tool that we would commonly find in a photo editor, and that's the Fuzzy Selection Tool (or magic wand). If Blender had this Tool, I think would no longer need Gimp (or any photo editor for that matter).
You can continue to use Blender for adding color and Gradients or you could jump over to the photo editor of your choice. We can then simple add some colors, Shadows and more visual interest.
I hope you guys find this video helpful and as always thanks for watching!.

First we need to enable the Add-on which is built-in (so no need for additional downloading) In The Add-on section of the Preferences we just need to search for Grease Pencil Tools and Enable the Add-on. Once Enabled we don't need to worry about it again.
Then all we need to do is Import the Brush Pack as and when we want to use it. By clicking the Specials Icon and then Choosing Import we now have 16 new brushes.
There is a bunch to choose from and all of them can be customized so definitely go ahead and play around with this amazing brush pack.

#b3d #blender #greasepencil #darkfall #brushpackBlender Grease Pencil Tutorial : How to Animate a Flying BirdDarkfall2021-06-10 | In this Blender Grease Pencil Tutorial, we will be using @BlenderOfficial Grease Pencil to Animate a 2D Bird / Wing flap animation as outlined in the "Animators Survival Tool Kit" by Richard Williams.
The Book has a bunch of really useful Methods, Principles and Formulas perfect for beginner Animators. I have found it to be such a massive help with these videos and recommend checking it out: amzn.to/3vb8VkP
We first start by drawing our Bird. You can follow the previous videos principles by using construction lines to create a rough sketch and then go back and add your Detailing/Inking step. In this tutorial I create some materials instead.
Once the Bird has been drawn, we need to create a Chart. This will help show us the positions of the Wings on the given frame. It will also give us a visual representation to the Timing. We can see how much or little the wings are Easing in/out.
We will be talking about this in more detail in future videos but as outlined in the Book, the positions work well for a cartoon Bird / wing flap. In fact it could be used for a number of flying creatures.
Thankfully we only need to draw 8 Frames for the wings and then we can just duplicate to loop the action. We could even use the Timer Offset Modifier much like we did in the Previous Lip Sync Tutorial.
I hope you found this video helpful and as always thanks for watching!.

In this video, we will be taking a look at my new favorite Modifier in order to not only Lip Sync but it can be used for a number of other things such as Blinks, Eyebrow Articulation, Hand shapes and more!.
Once we have our Mouth Shapes we can then use the Timer Offset Modifier. (NOTE: The Timer Offset Modifier is broken in Blender Version 2.92 In the video I am using Version 2.93 I believe the Modifier also works in Some Older Versions of Blender).

This is Part One of the 2D Character Creation series. In this video we will be Designing our 2D Character using @BlenderOfficial Grease Pencil.
For a while now a few of you guys have been telling me to check out the Grease Pencil and 2D Animation. Since my drawing skills are really poor, I was in no rush to use it.
A few weeks ago I thought I would try it out, even with my terrible drawing skills. I wanted to see if someone like me (again sucks at drawing but also had no previous experience creating 2D Animations) could create something that remotely resembles an animation.
Creating animations with the Grease Pencil is certainly possible, in fact there are loads of amazing animations being created with the Grease Pencil. Hero: youtu.be/pKmSdY56VtY just one of many beautiful examples.
If you have any kind of drawing talent you will have a much better time at it than I did. As with everything in blender, the Grease Pencil is such an awesome tool and I will certainly be using it more in the future.
I hope you find these Blender Grease Pencil Animation Tutorials helpful and as always thanks for watching!.

Looking to learn Python for beginners? You are in the right place. Be sure to check out the Scripting Playlist!.
The Redo Operator Panel is a fantastic little addition to any add-on, it gives the user more control of the Operator (after Execution). For this example I will be using a Template Panel and Operator. You can find the Template script in our blog here: darkfallblender.blogspot.com/2021/03/blender-python-tutorial-redo-operator.html
I add a cube and change the location (though this could be any function or action you want). Then by adding some BL info in the operator we can add our Redo Panel. Once we have it working we can then make it look better by turning the Operator into a Pop-up Dialog Box (which is something we covered in a previous video). We can also make it look pretty by defining the draw method (again something we covered in a previous video) Be sure to check out the scripting playlist.

We will be adding some Particle System Properties to our Panel. We can easily find out how to do this by checking out the Info Window as we actually change the options manually.
Once we know where the options or Properties live we can then reference them in our Panel and bring over as much or as little as we want.
Having your commonly used tools and properties at hand is not only easy to do but is a great way to speed up your Blender workflow.
You can download the Basic Template or you can download the finished script in our blog post.

With help from Green Screen, masking and a little tracking even beginners can create this shot.
I wanted to turn our bright, vibrant video footage (Link in blog post) into something right out of Diagon Alley.
With a little tracking we can add a 2D Plane for our sign and change the colors of our shot to get that grungy vibe. Using Blender for VFX is not only easy but can be streamlined with a few helpful tools.
In the actual Harry Potter Movie, the Sign starts off Black and then appears as if by magic. To simulate that same effect, I took a video (Link in blog post) and used it as the Factor of a Mix Node.
With a little Color Correction and Color Grading we have our Diagon Alley (kinda, but not really).. You can take this further and add more images of videos (such as the birds above the sign) and add more life into shot.
I hope you find this Blender VFX tutorial helpful and as always, thanks for reading!.

Looking to learn Python for beginners? You are in the right place. Be sure to check out the Scripting Playlist!.
Today's Video, we will be taking a look at a comment left by Kayla Man. Who followed one of my tutorials, made some changes and now the code no longer works. I thought it would be good to, not only answer their question but also show you guys the process of finding the fault and then fixing it.
I find that most problems that are submitted are pretty common ones such as spelling mistakes / typos, using the wrong syntax or character and other such things. Knowing how to find the problem then making the adjustments is not always straight forward as you can see in this video.
I hope you find this video helpful and if you like this new content, be sure to let me know in the comments.
If you have also followed one of my tutorials, made changes and it now no longer works? Let me know in the comments below or head over to one of our social media's.
Is your problem complex? If you have a problem that is more complex than this you should check out Stack Exchange: stackexchange.com You can submit your problem and code, and pretty soon you should have an answer to your problem.

This effect is really simple and quite effective, just by removing the Wheels and replacing them with a nice clean section of our video we can get this awesome Hoverboard VFX effect. If you have the VFX nodes Add-on Installed you will be able to speed up your workflow and get this effect done in seconds!.
If you are recording this footage yourself, I would suggest adding a couple of Markers on the skateboard. They will certainly help you with the Masking step.
If you are not able to add Markers, not to worry!. We will be using the Wheels for our Tracking (though we will need to offset the Tracks when the wheels go out of frame).

The process of adding mist/ fog to our renders would normally take quite a few steps. First you need to activate the Mist Pass, then activate the Mist Pass in the Viewport, then switch to the world settings and set the start and depth of the mist pass, then finally we need to arrange the compositor nodes.
This is not a hard process but is very much time consuming. That's why I thought it would be a good idea to create the INSTA-MIST Addon and share it with you.
This is version 1.0 and if you guys like it, I will continue to develop it. If you want to see how it was made or want to create your own? Check out the scripting playlist.
I hope you find this add-on helpful and as always thanks for watching!Blender Python Tutorial : Add-on Creation - Insta-Mist [learn python for beginners]Darkfall2020-10-20 | In this Blender Python Scripting Tutorial, we will be creating a new add-on which will help speed up our workflow when working with Mist.
As Artists, we often repeat the same process over and over (such as adding mist) and though it's not a complex task, it is rather time consuming. With the help of a little python code we can take the hassle out of adding Mist.
Looking to learn Python for beginners? You are in the right place. Be sure to check out the Scripting Playlist!.
I wanted to show how easy it was to create a simple Add-on that speeds up the process quickly. Each of us use Blender for different reasons but it's always a good idea to improve your workflow by creating personalized tools like the Insta-Mist.
Not only will we enable the Mist Pass, Enable the Viewport Display in the camera settings, adding the Mist Options to our newly created panel but we will also arrange the compositor for this whole effect to work. So the next time we want to add Mist to our Renders we can simply press a button and let the add-on do the hard work for us.
We will only need a Panel and an Operator, though to make it look better, I later added a sub panel (if you want to know how to add a sub panel be sure to check out our scripting playlist).
If you want to download the Starting Template script or the finished Add-on you can download them for free (links in blog post).

You may or may not have had this same error message or you may have one similar. I wanted to show you how we can use the Info window to read the Error Message.
Once we understand what the problem is, we can easily fix it by removing the invalid code and replacing it with the correct one.
Even though this was a simple fix, though some Error messages are more complex but by reading the error message we can get a better understanding of the problem.

Blender 2.90 Tutorial, learn python scripting (for beginners)Blender 2.90 is here! - Scripting Changes!!?Darkfall2020-09-08 | In this video, I wanted to let you guys know that version 2.90 is available and I will be using this new version for all future Tutorials. I also wanted to show some of the changes to the Scripting Workspace and some other changes that may break your add-ons.
The Info Window has been slightly redesigned with clear icons and nice spacing, making it much easier to read the lines of code.
Though not all changes are good, with the new version there are some problems with our old scripts. Many of them may not work as they should or at all.
This could be due to a number of things though if you read your error messages you should be able to quickly diagnose the bug and fix it with ease. In the next video we will be checking out an error message and how we can fix it, so be sure to look out for that!.

Looking to learn Python for beginners? You are in the right place. Be sure to check out the Scripting Playlist!.
Simply by changing the subtype of a property can change how the property is displayed on a panel or dialog box.
Within custom properties we can define many different arguments such as the Name, description and so on. In this example we want to focus one one argument in particular and that is the subtype. Using the Python Console we can not only find what arguments we can use but also what subtypes and more.
You will find that some subtypes are useful for certain situations and depending on what option or value you want to display, the choice will vary. Thanks to the String Subtype,
I also wanted to show you a quick way to password protect your operations or options. You could take it further and add more features to it.

Looking to learn Python for beginners? You are in the right place. Be sure to check out the Scripting Playlist!.
We can create something simple or something complex but both ways will be using an Operator. We first create a panel where our button will live. Then we can create a simple operator, that when pressed will create and assign a Shader Material to the Selected Object.
If you want the user to have any options, we can easily upgrade the simple operator and make it become a popup dialog box. We can then giver the user control over any setting or option. In this example we want the user to be able to set the color before adding the Shader.

Looking to learn Python for beginners? You are in the right place. Be sure to check out the Scripting Playlist!.
In past videos I may have (incorrectly) told you to name your classes in a way that may kick up an error message. We should follow the Correct Naming Convention in order to keep our scripts tidy and separate.. If we have Classes that share the same name we could cause unexpected results.
I hope this quick Blender Python Tutorial helps and as always thanks for watching!.Blender Python Tutorial : Enumerator / Drop down Menu [learn python for beginners]Darkfall2020-07-13 | In this Blender Python Tutorial, we will be taking a look at an Enumerator also known as a drop down menu.
Looking to learn Python for beginners? You are in the right place. Be sure to check out the Scripting Playlist!.
We will be using a template script that has a simple Panel and a blank Pop up Dialog Box Operator. If you want to download the starting script and follow along you can download it here: pastebin.com/JEdsTr61
Using the Enumerator we can give the user a list of options. In this example we give the User the option to choose from three different basic options. You can take this further and create more complex presets. For example, the Text Tool addon has some presets that have several lines of code to achieve the effect.

To download version 1.06, be sure to head over to our blog (link below).
In this update, we have three new additions to the Library.
Cloud Brick Sci-fi Gold
They still need a little work (especially the Cloud Shader) but they are pretty good depending how you use them. For example, we used the Cloud Shader in the Last Tutorial "Project Cloud". I will be improving them in the next version along with adding more functionality (such as having options to change before adding the Shader ).
I also addressed the problem some of you guys had when using the Add-on in newer versions of blender and I appreciate those who reported the bugs!.
I hope you find this update helpful! and as always, thanks for watching..

I created the Cloud Shader for this tutorial and so it still needs a lot of work to not only look good but to be easier to use.. That being said, it will be addressed shortly (time permitted)..
If you want to download any of the assets used in the video you can find the download links in the blog: (Scheduled for upload)

I wanted to create a gloomy/atmospheric surface with a bunch of mountains in the background. Along with some visual interest (in the form of a sphere). Since I used eevee it took less than a second to render each frame (though if you want to use cycles, then feel free to do so!).

To download version 1.04, be sure to head over to our blog (link below)
In this update, I have implemented a suggestion that was to display the shaders color in the Viewport. This has no bearing on the Render but I think it a great suggestion since we can now easily see which object is using which shader.
We also now have a Material Section. My aim is to fill this section with useful materials much like the new Addition, the Leather Shader.
The Leather Shader is a procedural generated Material. So you don't need to download any images or worry about setting up the shader. Simply select the Color you want your Leather Material to be and the Shader Library will the work for you.
You can tweak the Material and make any changes you want to really get varied (and better) results.
If you have any suggestions on things you want to see implemented in the Shader Library, feel free to let us know in the comments below. I hope you find this update helpful.

To download the update, be sure to head over to our blog! (link below).
In the last update we had added the Glitch Node and many of you guys seemed to like it. Some have also made some suggestions which I am still looking to implement in the future.
In this update, it's mainly just maintenance and small improvements such as adding a Shortcut Menu for the nodes, removing the unused Color input values (you know those annoying boxes along side the Movie clip/mask inputs) and other minor changes.
For those of you who have experienced the Missing Panel Bug, will be happy to know that it has been fixed and you should have no more problems (at least from that bug).
If you guys come across anything you think should be addressed, you can always drop a comment on one of my videos or head over to our facebook Group.
I hope you are finding this add-on helpful, and as always thanks for watching!.
