Paleontologists dig for Jurassic dinosaur fossils American Museum of Natural History 2023-11-18 | The Morrison Formation is one of the most famous dinosaur fossil sites in North America. Since the 1890s, it has been the site of discoveries such as Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus, and Allosaurus. But there’s more to be uncovered. In 19th century, expeditions to the Morrison Foundation focused on the fossil remains of large animals, but today scientists are searching for fossils of species that were previously overlooked, especially in the relatively understudied northern portion. A team led by Museum paleontologist Mark Norell has returned year after year to uncover layers of the Jurassic. Cave Bear Facts! American Museum of Natural History 2022-09-20 | This fearsome fossil is Ursus spelaeus, a cave bear that lived 14,000 years ago. Cave bears, although related to the largest living bears the Arctic, lived only in Europe. Cave finds in the Alps are evidence that the bears’ habitat extended up to altitudes of 6,300 feet. Most of the tens of thousands of remains found are of young and old animals that died during hibernation. How Can a Pandemic End? American Museum of Natural History 2022-02-15 | Pandemics occur when a disease spreads to many regions of the world and infects many people at the same time, as COVID-19 did in 2020. So, how can we stop a pandemic like COVID-19? With measures like mask-wearing, physical distancing, and, most importantly, vaccines, all of which cut off paths for the virus to spread. #Pandemic #Endemic #Vaccines #Containment Vaccines reduce infections, hospitalizations, and deaths and help achieve community immunity. Over time, a disease like COVID-19 may become endemic—always present in a population but spreading infrequently once a high level of community immunity is achieved. The end of a pandemic may also depend on how a particular disease manifests. The virus SARS-CoV-1, a coronavirus closely related to SARS-CoV-2 (which causes COVID-19), causes severe symptoms quickly and individuals aren’t contagious until after they show symptoms. Its spread in 2003 was stopped within six months using quarantine and isolation measures.
