Crystal ShaulisThis is an update to my other French-link and Coptic stitch video. Instead of punching sewing stations into the covers for every sewing station in the signatures, I only made 2, one for each Coptic-sewn area. After the sewing was finished, a matching end page was glued to the front and back covers.
The French-link and Coptic-stitch combination is a beautiful exposed spine binding that is much quicker than a strictly Coptic binding and also uses less thread as it uses one needle rather than multiple. Just as a Coptic book might, this exposed binding also lays flat making it ideal for journaling and sketching.

I received an email from a friend about using liquid laundry starch to do a variation on Turkish Ebru paper marbling - unable to find it locally, I decided to give the cornstarch option a try. It's not the greatest, but it technically works.
This option is nice if you want to try ebru marbling but want to use materials on hand rather than purchasing methyl cellulose or carrageenan online. The results aren't very defined and the colors become muddled.Suminagashi Paper Marbling DIY Japanese Water Marbling (How to Marble Paper)Crystal Shaulis2016-02-26 | Visit my store! ---lakemichiganbookpress.com
How to marble paper using the Suminagashi technique. Simply pour water into a tray and gently touch your inked paintbrush to the surface of the water to draw the ink out. Once you're satisfied with your design, lay a sheet of paper atop it and peel it away.
This is an activity for people of all ages - if working with small children, use disposable cake tins for a vat and pieces of yarn instead of paintbrushes.
For 'clear' ink, use a mixture of a drop of dish soap to a cup of water.

In this video, the tiny book I'm sewing is made from leather, card stock and cotton thread. Long-stitch and chain-link (aka coptic) stitches were used.

It’s a surprise present for a woman’s friend who is a big fan of the card game. Since Venser’s Journal has a very specific design on the cover, we agreed that I would make the vegan leather book with metallic card stock corners, then send along a piece of that same card stock for her to design, cut out, and apply to the front of the journal.

Here, I take my dried text block and create a quarter-bound cover using an Indian screenprint of retro orange, brown, tan and gold foil flowers with iridescent rust-blue Japanese linen book cloth. The end pages are a complementary blue card stock.
