#FoodInFiction #WritingTips #Storytelling #ShowDontTell #Worldbuilding #CharacterDevelopmentHow to Make Your Story Stand Out In Any GenreStory Marc2024-09-21 | Hey writers! 🌟 Ever felt like your story is getting lost in the crowd? 🤔 Twitter gave me a fantastic idea recently that could be a game-changer for promoting your writing! 🐦📚 I know, social media isn't everyone's favorite, but sometimes it leads to brilliant insights.
In this video, I'll dive into how a casual Twitter interaction with a fellow writer, Noah, sparked an epiphany about how we pitch our stories. 🤓 Noah's romance novella got me thinking about how simply naming a genre isn’t enough to make your book stand out in a saturated market.
Why does just saying "romance" or "thriller" fall flat?
It’s Broad and Generic: “Romance” is too vague and doesn’t highlight what makes your story unique. The Market is Crowded: There are thousands of romance stories out there—how does yours rise above the rest? Lack of Emotional Hook: Readers want more than a genre; they want an experience. What specific emotions does your story evoke? Missed Marketing Opportunities: Specificity can attract niche audiences who are searching for exactly what you offer. Join me as I explore how to craft a pitch that truly resonates and captures the essence of your story. 🔍💬 I'll share tips and strategies to help you go beyond basic genre labels and make your work stand out. We delve into the attributes of heroism—proactive engagement, dauntlessness, exceptional prowess, and moral triumph—drawing from various philosophical traditions such as Aristotelian Virtue Ethics and Sartrean Existentialism.
But what about the villains? We flip the coin to define villainy as the deliberate commitment to actions that harm others, often exploiting vulnerabilities for selfish or destructive purposes. Learn how villains use their abilities to spread fear, chaos, and despair, motivated by selfishness, greed, and a desire for power.

This subject has been on my mind lately as I work out how to conclude a trilogy.
I firmly believe that heroism and villainy are not subjective. Moral relativism has no place in storytelling, as it only dilutes the powerful messages we strive to convey as writers. Drawing inspiration from Robert McKee's "Story," I discuss how a lack of shared values and the rise of moral confusion contributes to the decline of compelling narratives.
In this video, I share a satisfying definition of heroism that I’ve found and break it down into four key attributes:
Promoting Human Life: Heroes take actions that profoundly improve or save lives through constructive means. Facing Extreme Challenges: Heroes display perseverance and courage, undeterred by danger or difficulty. Possessing Extraordinary Abilities: Heroes use their exceptional skills, whether intellectual or physical, to overcome obstacles. Achieving Moral Victory: Even if practical success is elusive, heroes inspire others through their unwavering commitment to their ideals.
Using this framework, I analyze the characters in "Man of Steel," debunking that Zod could be seen as a hero and affirming Superman's heroic status despite his controversial decision to kill Zod.
Join me as I explore how these principles can guide us in creating clear, compelling heroes in our stories. Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments and check out my playlist on writing heroes for more insights!

Over the last two decades or so, magic systems in media have been categorized into two broad types: hard and soft. From what I can gather from my research, we can thank Brandon Sanderson for popularizing these terms and breaking down their distinctions.
This framework has proven invaluable for both creators and critics. Hard magic is defined by its clear, explicit rules and limitations, operating almost like a science. Soft magic, on the other hand, embraces the mysterious and unknowable, often defying explanation and creating a sense of wonder.
I’ve seen many treat this as a binary, despite the fact Sanderson himself acknowledges there being things in between. I myself am guilty of this. I think part of the problem is that “hard” and “soft” magic have clear definitions, but not everything in the middle. So, with that in mind, I’ve created to a diagnostic tool I call “The Theory of Magic Dynamics.”

Hello there!👋
‘Story Marc’ is back again with a new video! Today’s video is about writing Sociopaths and what stories like Fullmetal Alchemist can teach for Sociopath writing.
I had a fun question about how to portray sociopaths in a fiction pop-up! And I couldn’t help but drop everything I had planned to create this episode! If you’re wondering why, the reason is twofold.
1) I’ve been diving into the traits and nuances of sociopathic characters for some time now for my private research. I might write one myself someday, though I don’t know when.
2) It gives me an excuse to talk about some of my favourite sociopaths in fiction.
Not all of them – I’m not discussing John Wayne Cleaver from the “I Am Not A Serial Killer” books in this – but I do wish to highlight Jade Curtiss from Tales of the Abyss, Solf J. Kimblee from Fullmetal Alchemist, Elmer C. Albatross from Baccano!— that freak bothers me more than any other on this list — and Sameen Shaw from Person of Interest. By analyzing these characters, we can pick up on the patterns that portray sociopathic characters as more than just evil for the sake of evil.

Do you struggle to make your readers feel truly connected to your characters? Do you often find yourself rushing through your stories? Whether you're an overwriter cramming too much info into your scenes or just looking for ways to slow down and deepen your narrative, you're in the right place.
🎯 In this video, I'll cover: → 0:00 Common Issues → 0:27 Tip 1: Spend Time on Detailed Sensory-Rich Descriptions → 0:50 Tip 2: Allow for Extended Scenes → 1:06 Tip 3: Use Internal Monologue → 1:20 Tip 4: Allow Natural, Unhurried Dialogue → 2:28 Tip 5: Subtle Plot Progression → 2:47 Tip 6: Emphasize Routine → 3:06 Tip 7: Use Nonlinear Storytelling
🔹 7 Tips for Gentle and Immersive Pacing: 1. Spend Time on Detailed Sensory-Rich Descriptions: Let the reader fully experience the environment and the character's inner worlds.
2. Allow for Extended Scenes: Give readers more time to connect with characters and understand their thoughts and emotions.
3. Use Internal Monologue: Delve into your character's thoughts and feelings, slowing down the narrative to explore their inner world.
4. Allow Natural, Unhurried Dialogue: Create meaningful conversations that reflect personalities and relationships without rushing.
5. Subtle Plot Progression: Show how small actions and decisions contribute to larger changes over time, avoiding the clustering of significant events.
6. Emphasize Routine: Focus on routine and small repetitive tasks to highlight the beauty in simplicity and mindfulness.
7. Use Nonlinear Storytelling: Add depth by showing how character backgrounds and past experiences shape who they are in the present.
