1933 - Hemsley Winfield, a choreographer and dancer stepped on stage as the Witch Doctor in a production of “The Emperor Jones” at the Metropolitan Opera. Winfield became the first African-American Choreographer and Dancer to perform at the Met, but he is largely regarded for creating the New Negro Art Theater Dance Group, influenced by the Harlem Renaissance movement of the 1920’s.
