Earn a Master of Arts in Creative Media and Technology, specializing in writing and production for musical theater, at Berklee NYC. This one-year graduate program combines storytelling, book writing, lyric writing, songwriting, music, and creative technology to help you develop and amplify your artistic voice and create new work for contemporary theater.
At Berklee NYC, you’ll take a future-facing, collaborative approach to musical theater writing and production while developing the creative, technical, and professional skills needed to bring a musical from an idea to the stage.
In the writing and production for musical theater program, you will:
• Develop your skills in character development, storytelling, songwriting, lyric writing, and book writing for musical theater.
• Explore musical narrative, music and storytelling, and contemporary approaches to the musical theater form.
• Gain hands-on experience in demo recording, arranging, and musical theater production.
• Workshop and showcase new work while collaborating with writers, composers, musicians, actors, and other artists.
• Learn how to take a musical from an initial idea through development, recording, rehearsal, and production.
• Use creative technology and industry-leading tools to enhance your artistic work.
• Develop collaborative skills for working across the stages of musical theater creation, development, and production.
• Gain insight into current industry practices and strategies for developing, pitching, and promoting new work.
• Build a cohesive body of work that reflects your technical skills and distinct artistic point of view.

Berklee NYC’s writing and production for musical theater specialization combines the New York theater experience with Berklee’s forward-looking curriculum and technology-focused approach to creative work. The program emphasizes both compelling storytelling and creative technology, giving students opportunities to develop their own work while exploring new possibilities for where and how musical theater can be presented. Whether your goals include traditional theater spaces, Off-Broadway, Broadway, or emerging performance environments, you’ll develop strategies for creating and developing original work.
Through workshops, critiques, arranging and recording sessions, and collaborations with industry professionals, you’ll gain experiential insight into the contemporary musical theater industry.
You’ll also gain first-hand experience recording demos in the same studios where many Broadway cast albums are made.
