Would you rather spend 77,000 points for 14 hours in economy or 85,000 points and $70 for 14 hours in first class? Well, that’s literally what Erin and I did using positioning flights. Instead of booking from our home airport, we took a cheap 'positioning flight’ to Chicago and from there, award space was available in ANA First Class for 85,000 points…just 8,000 more than the original economy seat. Positioning flights can unlock cheaper fares, help you find premium cabin award seats, and avoid crazy connections and layovers, but you need to plan for buffer time and this strategy is much easier if you pack in a carry-on. So the next time you’re searching for flights, ask yourself: Are there decent, affordable options from your home airport? If yes, great. If not…do any major hubs have better deals? If so, what’s the cost to get to that hub? And then, of course, do the savings justify that extra cost in time and money to position yourself? You can learn more here, but this is by far my most used travel strategy that has saved me thousands of dollars and allowed me to fly in premium cabin seats all over the world, so let me know...
