If slaughterhouses are humane and the way we kill the animals we eat is ethical, then why don’t we take the animals we love to slaughterhouses when they’re euthanised?
After all, we want our companion animals to be euthanised in the most humane way possible and for their wellbeing to be the number one priority, which is exactly what we’re told happens to animals in slaughterhouses.
Yet, if someone tried to euthanise our companion animals by putting them in gas chambers and by cutting their throats, not only would we try to stop them, but they would be arrested for animal cruelty. So according to our laws and societal standards, killing animals in slaughterhouses is both an example of being kind and humane to animals and also an example of animal cruelty that you would be arrested for.
The fact that we wouldn’t want the animals we love to be killed in slaughterhouses demonstrates to us that we already recognise that what happens in slaughterhouses is the opposite of humane.
