World's Largest Disney Auction: That's From Disneyland! Pop-up Exhibit.
It's like Disneyland in a random abandoned Sports Authority store in Sherman Oaks. The collection took over 25 years to build, by one man, Richard Kraft.
On August 25 and 26, Van Eaton Galleries will auction off each item in the collection. Until then, the pop-up gallery is free, open to the public.
Some of the auction proceeds will benefit the Coffin-Siris Syndrome Foundation and the CHIME Institute. Kraft’s own daughter has Coffin-Siris Syndrome.
According to an article in the Los Angeles Daily News, Kraft's most expensive purchase: the Dumbo seat from the “Dumbo the Flying Elephant” ride, at a Florida auction for $35,000. The other bidder was supposedly Michael Jackson.
The largest item in his collection: The animatronic Sea Serpent from the Submarine Voyage attraction. It is 48 FEET LONG. It used to decorate Kraft’s backyard pool. The Davy Crockett Explorer Canoe comes in second at 38ft, a Tom Sawyer Island ride.
He started collecting with a 1956 Autopia Tomorrowland poster.
His favorite (and mine) might just be the scrolling Haunted Mansion paintings, as seen in the elevator portion of the dark ride.
