World War Weird explains the most mysterious and bizarre events of both the World Wars. In the chaos of battle men claim to have witnessed some of history’s strangest sightings and in the minds of their leaders; ludicrous military plans have been hatched. From unexplained sea monsters spotted by U-boat captains to some of the weirdest weaponry of the Wars, each episode will examine the stories in fascinating detail. Despite decades of research by historians and experts, many accounts still remain a complete mystery. Using de-classified documents and military historians, World War Weird attempts to explain the unexplainable and explore the fascinating history associated with some of the darkest periods in human history.
Army of the Apes:
1920s Russia, Stalin has stormed to power and is in need of a powerful and loyal fighting force. For this he turns to Professor Illya Ivanovich Ivanov. The scientist gets to work on one of the weirdest and most perverse experiments in modern history, the creation of a human ape hybrid to be Stalin’s super soldier! But just how close did Stalin come to getting his Soviet Ape Army that could change warfare as we know it?
Zombie Squadron:
In 1943 Churchill desperately wanted to take the Island of Sicily out of German hands. The island could be the gateway the Allies need into Nazi held Europe, the problem is, it’s heavily defended by Hitler’s forces. Churchill needs a plan and Operation Mincemeat is one of the most cunning ruses the British have ever conceived. Involving the body of a tramp, fake documents and a well laid plan MI5 hope it’s enough to trick Hitler himself.
The Nazi Plague:
In 1970s Connecticut a strange new disease started to spread through the population and scientists are at a loss to explain where it came from or even what it is! But could a top secret Government bio-warfare facility give them the answers they need. Rumours spread, like the disease, that top secret experiments and Nazi scientists could be the cause...
Ghost Airship:
The crew of the American L-8 blimp are scouting for Japanese submarines off the San Francisco coast. They radio back to base that they have spotted something suspicious. It’s the last contact anyone has with them. Hours later the damaged airship crash lands in downtown San Francisco but the crew have mysteriously vanished. Despite week-long searches and a full military investigation the crew’s fate remains a mystery…
