The outbreak of World War One unfolded from fears of a two-front conflict and the logic of German mobilisation.
Germany anticipated that a Russian mobilization would threaten its eastern flank, so the Schlieffen Plan was devised to avoid fighting on two fronts simultaneously. The plan entailed rapid German advance through neutral Belgium to envelop and decisively defeat French forces near Paris, achieving a swift victory that would free German forces to confront Russia. Consequently, Germany declared war on France, mobilising six million soldiers to converge on the European front.
While Italy remained neutral initially, the Triple Alliance did not obligate it to participate in offensive war, and the United States proclaimed neutrality, preferring to stay out of Europe’s entanglements under President Wilson.
Britain, bound by alliance with France, wavered about entry into the war; however, when German forces invaded Belgium, Britain, which had guaranteed Belgian neutrality, issued an ultimatum demanding withdrawal. The ultimatum was ignored, and Britain declared war, transforming a localized European crisis into a broader conflict.
This sequence—mobilisation fears, a strategic plan to prevent a two-front war, rapid offensives through Belgium, and a cascade of declarations of war by Britain, France, and others—set the stage for a global war driven by alliance commitments, strategic miscalculations, and evolving perceptions of threat and credibility.
