A passenger ferry has capsized off the coast of Kyrenia in northern Cyprus, killing at least eight people, with 18 others missing. The ferry was traveling from Kyrenia to Taşucu in southern Türkiye when the accident happened on Sunday. Authorities say water began entering the vessel shortly after it set off. There were 267 people on board, including eight crew members. Coast guard ships and helicopters were sent to the area to rescue passengers. The captain and crew have been detained as authorities investigate the cause of the accident.
Now, over to the U.S., where Google Maps has labeled "Lake Ontario" as “Lake America,” following President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the lake.The change reflects an update to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, or GNIS, the federal database for official geographic names. Google says it updates Maps to reflect names from official government sources. Canadian users will continue to see “Lake Ontario,” while users in other countries will see both names. Ontario Premier Doug Ford pushed back against the change and unveiled a large lakeside sign reading, “Lake Ontario: Now and Always.” The name dispute comes as the United States and Canada remain at odds over trade and tariffs, adding another point of tension between the two countries.
Icelanders have voted against restarting negotiations to join the European Union. In Saturday’s referendum, which saw a turnout of 82.5 percent, 52.8 percent voted against reopening talks. Iceland first applied to join the EU back in 2009, but halted negotiations in 2013. The renewed debate comes amid economic concerns and growing security tensions in the Arctic. But opponents of restarting the talks focused on protecting Iceland’s fishing industry and national sovereignty.
Now, to space, where NASA has launched a powerful new telescope. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off from Florida on Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The new telescope will offer a field of view about 100 times wider than those of the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, allowing scientists to survey large areas of the universe. Its mission includes studying dark matter and dark energy, as well as searching for planets beyond our solar system.
NASA says the telescope could identify tens of thousands of new exoplanets.
