This is a Tasnif in Dastgah Neva called "Raftam Dar e Meykhane" (Gone to the Tavern). It is based on the Sufi tradition. Going to the tavern here means going to get drunk, not of alcohol but God's presence. This is a very common theme in Sufi music and poetry. I learnt this piece listening to the great Traditional Persian music master Mohammad Reza Shajarian. He was a true jewel in the Persian musical universe.
Technical Guitar Notes:
The traditional music of Persia is based on a system known as Radiff. This is a collection of sound flavours called Dastgah and Avaz made of smaller bites referred as gushes.
One of the beauties of this music is the use of microtones. These are notes not commonly found in Western music which gives Eastern music styles part of their special flavour.
Fernando Perez performs the piece arranged for guitar with added fretlets in order to play the microtones found in the Persian Music Tradition.
