Workers’ Memorial Day is observed each year on the 28th of April. This important day of recognition began in Canada, was later adopted in the United States, and today is observed in countries across the globe. April 28th is also the same date that the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) was established in 1971.

OSHA states that Workers’ Memorial Day “…is a day to honor those workers who have died on the job, to acknowledge the grievous suffering experienced by families and communities, and to recommit ourselves to the fight for safe and healthful workplaces for all workers.”

THE NUMBERS

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) latest figures for 2016, there were a total of 5,190 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States that year, a 7% increase from the 4,836 fatal injuries reported in 2015. This was the third consecutive increase in annual workplace fatalities and the first time more than 5,000 fatalities had been recorded by the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) since 2008. The fatal injury rate increased to 3.6 per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers from 3.4 in 2015, the highest rate since 2010. (Worldwide, the United Nations’ International Labour Organization (ILO) reports that more than two million men and women die as a result of work-related accidents and diseases each year.)

Work injuries involving transportation incidents remained the most common fatal event in 2016, accounting for 40% (2,083). Violence and other injuries by persons or animals increased 23% to become the second-most common fatal event that year. Two other events with large changes were exposure to harmful substances or environments, which rose 22%, and fires and explosions, which declined 27%.

PROTECTING WORKERS

Federal OSHA, along with state partners, is tasked with protecting workers in the U.S. with approximately 2,100 inspectors. These inspectors are responsible for the health and safety of 130 million workers, employed at more than 8 million worksites around the nation. This translates to about one compliance officer for every 59,000 workers. There are also dedicated industrial hygiene, safety and environmental professionals working to prevent conditions that could result in deaths, illnesses and injuries.
