In this woodturning project I make a unique bowl using a combination of maple burl and ash wood. The contrast between the wild burl grain and the cleaner ash grain makes for a really interesting piece once it starts taking shape on the lathe.
This was a really fun bowl to turn, although I did have to make a couple of modifications along the way during the making process. That’s part of the joy of woodturning — sometimes the wood has its own plans and you just have to adapt as you go.
I shaped the bowl on my Record Power Coronet Herald Wood Lathe using carbide turning tools from Easy Wood Tools, which always make the turning process smooth and enjoyable.
After completing the turning, I finished the bowl using Yorkshire Grit Abrasive Paste to bring out the grain and leave a really smooth finish.
The final result is a beautiful wood art bowl that highlights the natural character of both maple burl and ash.
