I love making wooden toys and Yo-Yo's are near the top of the list! They are not hard to make, but they are hard to make right. They have to be symmetrical sides and also consistent through the diameter. Wood choice is probably the most important initial decision in the project. There are many shapes that will work, but I prefer the "normal" shape that fits into my hand very easily. I really like smooth lines with little or no embellishments.

The string is extremely important also. Just any-old string won't work properly in a yo-yo. Here is the pack of strings I bought a while back:
