Enjoy this extended clip of several different woodpeckers visiting the Cornell Feeders in Ithaca, NY on a recent summer afternoon. Woodpecker species seen in the video are Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, and a Hairy Woodpecker. Highlights include a group of three Red-bellied Woodpeckers (01:19), all three species at one time (02:57), and a Hairy Woodpecker accompanied by a male and female Downy Woodpecker (05:13).
Need some help identifying who is who? Red-bellied Woodpecker males have red caps that go from crown to nape while females only have red napes (juveniles lack the red cap). Downy Woodpeckers are smaller than Hairy Woodpeckers, and in both species the males have red patches on the back of their heads.
Other birds seen in the video are a Blue Jay, Northern Cardinal, and a Red-winged Blackbird.

This FeederWatch cam is located in the Treman Bird Feeding Garden at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. Perched on the edge of both Sapsucker Woods and its 10-acre pond, these feeders attract both forest species like chickadees and woodpeckers as well as some species that prefer open environments near water like Red-winged Blackbirds.
The Wild Birds Unlimited store at Sapsucker Woods has been a part of the visitor experience in the Cornell Lab’s Visitor Center ever since the new building opened in 2003.
