"It's about the grain". A sentiment I repeat as a mantra in my videos because it defines tool usage, joinery and design. The upper echelon of builders take grain into consideration before they even start. Understanding what's inside the tree and how to get it out. Ya that sounds like religious mumbo jumbo but that's how it is.
Most of us don't have access to trees, much less a wide selection of species and drying ability. Slabs are the closets starting point we can get as they offer the most options to the designer/builder. So we have to know how to select a good slab.
