Women weren’t allowed in Irish pubs in Ireland until surprisingly recently. That sounds unbelievable today, because the modern Irish pub is known around the world as a warm, welcoming place where everyone gathers for a pint of Guinness. But historically, Irish pubs in Ireland were structured in ways that often excluded women from the main drinking spaces.

In this video I explore the real history behind why women weren’t allowed in Irish pubs in Ireland and how those rules actually worked. Many traditional Irish pubs were divided into separate spaces like the public bar, the lounge, and the snug, and each part of the pub came with its own social expectations. The room you walked into could determine who you were, what you drank, and whether you were even supposed to be there.

For decades the public bar in Irish pubs was overwhelmingly male. Women were often directed to the lounge instead, a quieter and more “respectable” room where drinks could even cost slightly more. In some pubs women weren’t served pints of beer at all and were expected to order half-pints, wine, or spirits instead.

One of the people who challenged this strange custom was Irish journalist and feminist Nell McCafferty, who famously walked into pubs in the 1970s and deliberately ordered pints as part of a protest campaign. Her actions helped expose how bizarre the rules had become and sparked conversations about women’s place in Irish public life.

I also explain the mysterious snug, a tiny enclosed booth found in many older Irish pubs. These small wooden rooms with frosted glass allowed certain people to drink discreetly without being seen from the main bar. Women, priests, police officers, and local officials sometimes used these spaces when public drinking was considered socially unacceptable.

Ireland changed rapidly in the late twentieth century. Social attitudes evolved, pubs became mixed spaces, and the Equal Status Act of 2000 finally made discrimination in services illegal. But if you walk into certain old pubs today, you can still see traces of this history in the architecture.

So why weren’t women allowed in Irish pubs in Ireland, and how did that rule finally disappear? In this video I break down the surprising history of Irish pub culture and the strange social codes that once shaped one of Ireland’s most famous institutions.
