A Nevada swimming instructor who teaches children rescue and safety tactics when they face unexpected hazards in water was attacked by a river otter in Lake Tahoe last week.
The woman says that she required 22 stitches in her foot after the encounter, and that the otter also bit her cheek, nose, and arm.
While it is extremely rare for river otters to attack humans, the Nevada Department of Wildlife said in a statement that "otters are wild animals and can become aggressive if they feel threatened, cornered or are defending young."
The department said it is working with local officials to put up cautionary signs in the area after the incident.
