I used Perl to code this KML file up, and while testing it discovered that the Geo::Calc library (that I used to calculate distances) had some sort of error where the distance from A to B was substantially different to the distance from B to A. I haven't looked into it further, but apparently taking the average of the two gives a value very close to what Google Earth gives (and hence why I have a DistanceBetween function):
