Odin, or Woden as he was known in Anglo-Saxon tradition, was revered as the ancestor of the great kings of Scandinavia, and this divine heritage was equally claimed by the rulers of Anglo-Saxon England. “From the first, their leaders (the Anglo-Saxons) were held to be two brothers, Hengest and Horsa... They were sons of Wictgils, whose father was Witta, whose father was Wecta, whose father was Woden.”
This passage firmly places Woden at the foundation of a Anglo-Saxon royal line, linking the divine ancestry of the gods with the mortal kings who ruled over the English people.
