We have been offered partnerships over the years, but have always decided against them. We like to keep things simple at sunflower farm and bring you all the goodness without any of the noise. But sometimes things pop up that feel like perfect timing. Enter Birdfy!
Iāve been meeting a lot of bird watchers who come to the farm to visit the goats. Iām always amazed by how much they know about all the birds on our little 6 acre plot of land. For a long time Iāve been saying I wanted to know more. The only bird I knew a week ago was our state bird the chickadee! After just a week of having our video feeder set up, I know 6 different birds! (I think the woodpecker is a downy woodpecker right? That one was up in a tree so I didnāt get an ID assist from Birdfy.)
Iāll be honest, this winter Iāve been a little down in the dumps. Itās been one of the coldest winters in something like eight years, which sort of takes the fun out of farm chores. And the daily news has felt sad and exhausting. I canāt tell you the difference this amazing little birdfeeder has made in my mood. Now, when I pick up my phone, the first thing I do is open the Birdfy app and see if I have had any new bird visitors. Sometimes the birds get up even before I do and I take an extra minute in bed to look up any new friends I am seeing for the first time before heading out to the barn. It has given me something bright and lively to look forward to even in the dead of winter.
And perhaps the most fun thing of all is how excited all the people who know and love birds are about us having a feeder on the farm. We have a little competition going on Instagram and facebook which you are welcome to join. Guess the number of different bird species you expect us to see in January, February, and March. The tiebreaker will be who correctly guesses which birds in addition to the right number. The ones in this video count! On April 1st, we will give a farm gift certificate of $50 to the person who gets the closest.
