Simon Trewin delves into Eoin Colfer's process, and what really goes on inside his writing shed!
Eoin Colfer is from Wexford in Ireland, and was a primary school teacher until the first Artemis Fowl book was published in 2001. His first book Benny and Omar was based on his experiences working in Tunisia as a teacher, and translated into many languages. Despite going to No 1 in Ireland, it didn’t have the same impact as Artemis Fowl, which was named the public’s favourite Puffin Modern Classic of all time, and as a series has sold in excess of 25 million copies and has been translated into 40 languages.
There are eight books in the series, alongside numerous companion books.
Last year, a brand new spin-off series called The Fowl Twins was released, featuring Artemis Fowl’s younger brothers Myles and Beckett Fowl. And earlier this year the Artemis Fowl Movie, adapted by Disney, was released on Disney+ due cinema closures during pandemic. It was directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh and starred Judy Dench as Commander Root, Colin Farrell as Artemis Fowl Sr. and many more.
Eoin was commissioned write And Another Thing, the concluding episode of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, which became a worldwide bestseller. Eoin also writes crime novels featuring Irish bouncer Daniel McEvoy, science fiction and picture books, including the award winning Imaginary Fred, in collaboration with Oliver Jeffers.
Earlier this year Highfire, a fantasy novel for adults, was released, featuring a vodka-drinking, Flashdance-loving dragon who’s been hiding out from the world.
Next week, Deny All Charges, the second book in the Fowl Twins series is released, making it the perfect Christmas gift that will keep younger readers very busy over the festive period!
Eoin was Ireland’s Children’s Laureate and still wears the medal at all times, even in the bath.
