Our first family fishing trip of the year in Alberta didn’t go as planned.

We started the day boat fishing for walleye and pike, but heavy winds quickly made things difficult. After battling rough conditions, missed fish and relentless bugs, we decided to completely change our strategy.

Instead of giving up, we moved to a creek feeding into the lake and switched tactics using pickerel rigs, slip bobbers, spoons and jigs.

What started as a frustrating day turned into an incredible family fishing adventure with multiple walleye over 45 cm and even a surprise pike.
