Join me on a walk through Winchmore Hill, one of London’s most overlooked villages, where quiet streets hide some surprisingly rich stories. From its origins as part of Enfield Chase to its transformation after the arrival of the railway, this is a place where rural history, Victorian suburbia and modern London all meet.
Along the way we uncover tales of smugglers, local scandals and a breakaway religious sect, as well as connections to pop stars including Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard and Emma Bunton. There are historic buildings, ghost signs, old almshouses, a former farmhouse bakery, and a village green that still hints at Winchmore Hill’s past life as a rural hamlet.
We also explore the area’s Quaker heritage, hidden architectural details, and the remains of a grand estate landscape shaped by Humphry Repton. It’s a gentle walk through a part of London that many people pass by, but which rewards a closer look.
