In this video, I explore the fascinating history of a lost English royal palace, the Palace at Winchester in Hampshire. The construction of this palace was commenced in 1683 by Charles II, but it was sadly incomplete at the time of his death in 1685. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, and inspired by the French Baroque, the palace, if completed, would have been England's equivalent of Versailles - the finest and grandest palace in the country. The ruins of the incomplete palace were left to stand, but in the middle of the eighteenth century, they were repaired, and the structure was used as a prison, a home for refugees and then a barracks. It survived until 1894, only to be destroyed in a fire.
