Wimbledon: How A Pony Roller Birthed The Championships
July the 9th, 1877...and the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club began its first lawn tennis tournament, hosted at its home in Worple Road in the London suburb of Wimbledon.
Twenty-one gentlemen amateurs competed that year to take home a 25-guinea trophy. It was the world's first official lawn tennis tournament and later recognised as the first Grand Slam tournament.
Now one of the world's most prestigious sporting events, The Wimbledon Championships had humble beginnings - and very easily may never have existed at all...
