The son of the American hymn composer Lowell Mason, William Mason was known most notably for his position as a piano teacher. Most of his compositions are for the piano. This short solo work first appeared in 1895 and shows Mason's willingness to stretch the boundaries of traditional harmonic writing, even if just slightly.
