I've been waiting for this angry punk/folk song on Southern Issues to become irrelevant, but friends, it just hasn’t yet. If you’re feeling disenfranchised, I don’t blame you. One small thing you can do for your loved ones is vote. Another small thing is to speak up, make art, and take care.
There are no solutions in this song, but I don’t want you to get the wrong idea: I think the solution is out there. You just can't play country and not talk about the country. You can't play folk without talking to folks. I think we can look at our history with new eyes, play our banjos and fiddles for good reasons, and make our reckonings public on porches, in barrooms, and in our songs.
Thanks to Damen Washington and Yellow Gecko for getting up before dawn to shoot this on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Love. -Willi
