Canada could expand its non-U.S. goods exports by an additional $146 billion by 2035, with agri-food representing a primary growth driver, according to a new report by PwC. Capturing these international opportunities, however, requires overcoming significant infrastructure and trade logistics gaps and maybe even trade-offs between supply chains.
To unpack the logistics requirements and strategic shifts necessary to hit these trade targets, Shaun Haney sat down with Michael English, transportation logistics leader at PwC based out of Toronto.
According to the report, while Canada’s agri-food exports to the U.S. will continue to grow over the next decade, PwC projects that shipments to regions such as Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East will triple or quadruple. English says that capitalizing on this shift requires building resiliency and expanding bulk trade infrastructure toward eastern outlets, including East Coast ports, inland waterways, and rail network carload capacity.
When it comes to navigating the current trade war and trade disruption, English says we can't think too short term or consider opportunities in isolation. "Yes, we have to think short-term to protect our businesses, but we also have to think long-term and we got to think about those investments together."
Achieving these targets will require cross-sector collaboration to optimize major capital projects and manage shared transport corridors alongside minerals and energy. English notes that success hinges on taking a holistic view of the national supply chain rather than addressing logistics bottlenecks in isolation.
"I think the only way we really punch hard and meet our objectives to double non-U.S. exports is playing game together, right? It's going to be by collaborating with those new investments that are happening also in the defence sector," says English.
