I grew up in a home where I was reminded daily not to outshine my four older brothers. I was both too much and never enough. To be seen, not heard, preferably not seen, unless I was cleaning up after someone else.
F that noise is now where I go in my head, when those thoughts surface.
Also, when I admit that to people who know me closely, they often suddenly understand some of my characters more. Why Nephtyri does not want to take on the mantle with the tiara's weight. Why Rochelle both wanted to spare her mother figure and woefully failing to do so. Lee desiring to believe she is worth every good thing, only to land in the arms of a male who makes her question safety and relearn being herself with him is safe. Maria feeling both literally and metaphorically blind in a world she was not prepared to live in as a little girl who becomes a nun who becomes a vampire. Harumi who doesn't trust her voice enough to sing the songs that save herself and her friends and family.
We write what we know. They might look like characters from entirely different cultures and time periods in the end. However, we writers write what we know about strong women in a world who needs our strength. After all... the lion on the strength card should be the female.
