Sea turtles can be found in New Zealand waters, but it is never normal for them be found on our shores, as turtles don’t breed on New Zealand beaches. The turtles that are found on our beaches are critically ill or have sustained injuries.
The best thing to do if you see a sea turtle on a New Zealand beach is to call our conservation partners at @docgovtnz. Their team will assess the situation and will bring the sea turtle into our Zoo veterinary hospital for treatment and care.
This story follows the arrival and treatment of a green sea turtle with veterinary resident Hannah. Upon admission, the turtle undergoes a full health assessment, including a physical exam, blood tests, and X-rays. It is diagnosed with pneumonia and begins intensive treatment.
Once stable, turtles are transferred to SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s for ongoing rehabilitation, though they remain under the veterinary care of our vets.
Recovery can take months or even years before a turtle is fit for release, and each case requires a dedicated team working tirelessly to provide the best possible care.
