Feline eye color and coat patterns are primarily dictated by genetic variations in pigment production and cell migration. Additionally, PAX3 and KIT gene variants are responsible for white spotting and dominant white coats, which frequently coincide with blue eyes or heterochromia. While blue eyes often arise from light scattering rather than blue pigment, certain lineages carry a dominant blue eye (DBE) trait linked to retroviral insertions. Historically, these diverse iris colors evolved from a gray-eyed ancestor that existed millions of years ago.
