Transmitting on a single frequency is an all-or-nothing approach to interference, whereas using a range of frequencies makes it more likely that enough signal gets through to the receiver. There are several methods that can be used to send on a range of frequencies, including spread spectrum and multiplexing techniques. Modern Wi-Fi, for example, uses a technique called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) to spread its transmissions across the frequency range of the channel.
