The 90's installment of our screening series celebrating iconic films and television series made by women over the last fifty years was a 4K restoration of MISSISSIPPI MASALA, followed by a discussion with the film's director, Mira Nair.
With nuance, charm, and grounded sensuality, Mira Nair’s 1991 feature is a delightful and thoughtful exploration of life and love in an increasingly globalized world. Examining both the patterns that bring together African Americans and Indians displaced by history and the rifts that drive communities apart, Mississippi Masala takes on this aptly-named cultural blend with wit and humor, celebrating the multiplicities that make up our identities and sense of home.

Founded in 1973 as Women In Film Los Angeles, WIF advocates for and advances the careers of women working in the screen industries—in front of and behind the camera, across all levels of experience—to achieve parity and transform culture.
We work to change culture through our distinguished programs, including mentoring, speaker and screening series, a production training program, writing labs, film finishing funds, legal aid, and an annual financing intensive. WIF advocates for gender parity through research, education, and media campaigns. And, we build a community centered around these goals, anchored by our signature events, including the WIF Annual Gala and Female Oscar Nominees Party, along with programs honoring the achievements of women in Hollywood, like the Legacy Series.
