As is typical to Liszt's transcriptions, the original nature of the music remains, but with elegant virtuosic flourishes accompanying the melody. The theme here undergoes a development similar to what Liszt presents in his 3rd Concert Etude S144 (Db Major); the main theme is first exposed in the treble with a flowing arpeggio accompaniment. We then have a reprise but with the melody in the bass this time. The second theme is presented in E major, an augmented fifth higher. This again resembles the concert etude, with the exact same modulation. (Db to A)
After returning to Ab major, a typical Lisztian virtuosic passage with the melody in the base again transitions us to a grandiose main theme representation again and eventually to the end of the piece.
Perhaps the epitome of Liszt's style, the Widmung transcription has grown to become one of his most known adaptations, right beside the opera transcriptions.
