Why do some artists keep making work but feel as though they’re not making real progress? In this video, I’m sharing 5 common mistakes that can keep artists stuck — and they have very little to do with painting technique.
From wanting a painting to look good at every stage, to believing that progress means finishing more paintings, these are habits and assumptions that can quietly get in the way of artistic growth.
I talk about why paintings often need to get worse before they get better, why unfinished work and sketchbooks can be more valuable than finished paintings, and what happens when we start making art for sales, approval or other people rather than ourselves.
I also explore something I think is essential if you want to develop your own artistic voice: learning to pay attention to your own interests, obsessions and instincts rather than trying to manufacture an artistic style.
