Why does some lighting feel fake, even when it’s technically well exposed?
In this video, I break down how to create lighting that feels natural, believable, and connected to the environment. We’ll look at some of my own lighting mistakes, from overlighting a scene to losing contrast, uncontrolled spill, and relying too much on traditional 3-point lighting.
A big part of natural-looking cinematography is learning how to work with the environment instead of fighting against it. That means understanding existing light sources, shaping window light, controlling spill, removing light with negative fill, preserving contrast, and augmenting what’s already happening in the space.
