At first glance, this vest is gonna make some bikers look twice. You’ve got a big top rocker, center piece and bottom rocker on a black leather vest—the same basic silhouette people associate with traditional motorcycle club colors.
But this is exactly why you actually READ somebody’s patches before deciding what you’re looking at.
The rider sent me his story and explained that these patches represent the American Indian Movement, A.I.M. He says his family has been involved with the organization since the 1960s and he’s personally been involved since the 1990s. American Indian Movement, Lakota Nation, Wounded Knee, Leonard Peltier—this isn’t somebody claiming to be an MC.
Would I look twice if I saw this vest from across a gas station? Absolutely. But looking twice doesn’t automatically mean there’s a problem.
This might be one of the best examples I’ve been sent of why understanding biker culture means more than seeing a top rocker, center piece and bottom rocker and immediately screaming “MC colors.”
Same layout. Completely different meaning.
