If you wish to read Roentgen's first paper or first magazine article or a report on how people responded to the x-ray (including that story of secretly checking someone's fiancee) I highly recommend the book:
"Wilhelm Conrad Rntgen and the Early History of the Roentgen Rays" by Otto Glasser written in 1934 and reprinted in 1991.
