With the yen at a 40-year low, Japan needed to act, but dumping its huge pile of US Treasuries could have crashed America’s bond market. So the story goes that the US Treasury stepped in, sold euros from its reserves instead of dollars, and reportedly told European authorities only after the trade was done.
