We live in a different time. The standard understanding of building spiritual traditions on scripture has little validity outside of orthodox Hindu movements. Most people in the world do not accept the Vedas as revelation.
The reality is, the great acaryas, like Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva used scripture to validate their first hand realisation. Sampradaya and tradition is therefore built on their experience. It is then later justified and read into scripture.
The reason we follow a particular tradition, therefore is not because of the authority of scripture, but the attraction to the experiential mood of the great masters.
