In this short video, why TTL Logic gates typically have a Totem Pole output stage is explained.
Totem pole output stage provides active pull-up and pull-down and in a way offers low output resistance. Because of the low output resistance, the output of the gate is able to drive capacitive loads (the input of other TTL gates).
